In the garden we have fluted bird's nest (Cyathus striatus). Their seeds, looks like eggs. Falling raindrops make the seeds like a projectile, shooting out of the cups. The eggs, or peridioles, are actually lens-shaped bodies that contain spores. They stand behind the fence at the entrance to the Zanden boslaan. Natuurbericht wrote an article about it, with a moving picture recording. Here the article (Dutch) with moving picture

Gestreepte nestzwam Cyathus striatus

Jacobskruiskruid (Jacobaea vulgaris) laat bloeier

Besides this, there are still a few plants of Herb Robert (Geranium robertianum)
to bloom.
During the hours of sunshine today, the BEES flew back and forth. Especially for drinking water and to empty itself of feces.

Kijken in november.

Despite the fact that the month of November is already 8 days old, there is still much to see and enjoy in the garden. The leaves of deciduous trees has fallen, or thin and colored. The see-through is so much better. Nice crustfungi emerge. The berries of Solomon's seal (Polygonatum multiflorum) are black and down from them, rain drops droop. This gives the fruit a beautiful, glossy appearance. By losing of, and the withering of the leaf, are they more to see.

Indian Summer

At the moment, enjoying the beautiful autumn colors in the forest and also in the garden. First the color of the leaves of northern red oak (Quercus rubra) along the western edge, turns to beautiful red. Soon, also the beautiful red beech, (Fagus sylvatica 'Purpurea) is ready to go glow. The leaf of snowy mespil (Amelanchier lamarckii) and birch ( Betula) trees, has been a while yellow and is now working on losing its leaves. On a rainy day, the yellow of the fallen leaves gives a sunny effect on the bottom. The Guelder rose (Viburnum opulus) with beautiful red berries now has beautiful red colored leaf. The berries remain, the leaves fall down soon.

Knopig helmkruid (Scrophularia nodosa)

If she is crushed with the fingers, the odor is even disgusting . Yet the plant has many medicinal properties, such as blood purification. Formerly, the plant was known as lymph gland medicine. Lijsterbes Sorbus aucuparia.
Rowan Sorbus aucuparia, shrubs in the Rose family.
Spread over the garden, there are a number of rowan trees. Now decorated with beautiful ripe red fruits. The birds love the berries. The seeds are not digested in their intestines, but come with the manure out again. Thus, another sapling to grow at that location.
BEES keep the pollen from the cream-colored flowers, which bloom in May - June
Many other insects are also attracted by the fragrant flowers. The berries are except for birds, a favorite food for beetles, caterpillars, butterflies and even mammals. For men, the raw berries have a bitter taste, so they are usually first cooked and processed into jams and other dishes. The vitamin C content is high and medicinally they have used against colds and sluggish bowel. During the day, no more than ten berries, chew slowly.
The seeds contain toxic hydrocyanic acid.

Gelderse roos (Viburnum opulus)
The beautiful translucent red berries of the Viburnum opulus (Guelder Rose) give the garden some color. The berries are not favored by the birds. Apparently they first need to freeze , before they are edible. Only when there is scarcity of other foods, they are eaten by thrushes. How exactly nobody knows.
In the spring blossoms shrub with creamy white flowers on the side, to attract bees and insects for pollination. In the middle the actual fruit-bearing flowers that produce berries. After flowering the berries changed colors from green to yellow to red. At the base of the leaf, the petiole is a typical gland. The Guelder Rose is used as medicine. But do need to be cooked first.
In the book of Vasily Peskov "Lost in the Taiga", the Siberian survival handlers warned not to much of the berries to eat, because it leads to low blood pressure.
Guelder Rose's name comes from a legend about the origin of Gelderland, the largest province in the Netherlands. In the past, occupied half the surface area of Limburg. Geldern in Germany was be in function as the capital.
Actually there are two legends It is about a dragon that people teased him by shouting and emit toxic fumes. A Count had two sons: Wichard and Leopold. The boys defeated the dragon, while the monster shouted: "Gelre, Gelre. As a sign of victory they fixed flowers of the Gueldern Rose, on their shields. Their efforts were rewarded with permission to build a castle at that place. Around the castle grew the town Geldern.
Another story of romantic nature. This legend tells that Wichard fell in love with a Lady behind Zutphen, the then called Hamaland. Now known as "the Graafschap". The father of the woman, demanded of him that he carried out a brave act of battle. Wichard remembered himself, the dragon. Many people had problems with the monster. He went to attack with his weapons. It was a long struggle, but Wichard overcame. The end is the same as the previous story. With the Gueldern flower on his chest, he pulled the young lady to his heart.
The shrub has nothing to do with the rose family. The beauty of flowers and berries will be led to that name.

Chorthippus biguttulus Sprinkhaan
It is because of the clearly visible pronotum, most likely Bow-winged grasshopper (Chorthippus biguttulus), from the family locusts, which again is seen in the garden.
Locusts belong with crickets to the so-called Orthoptera insects. The cricket jumps not so far and is also smaller.
With their elongated hind legs especially locusts, make great leaps. Crickets and katydids, make sounds by rubbing the front wings. Grasshoppers rubbing the thick vein of the front wing, along the rough inside of the long hind. Every kind of about 25-36 native grasshoppers / crickets, has his own way of singing. The color of locusts, often green, is very different by species and by individual. Males usually make sounds, but in the mating season the females will chirp. The eggs are laid in briefcase form in the ground. The larvae hatch in April. With each molt they go look more like their kind.

Nachtvlindernacht. Night of Night moths (Campaea margaritata)
Epe.
trouwens 800 soorten in Nederland. Verslag van Emma.
Night of Night moths (rural) on Friday, September 6th in the Bee Garden. This started at 21.30h. and ended at 24:00. The evening was organized by the Working Group of Insects KNNV-dept. Epe. Including IVN IVN-ers-ers.15 people were present, partially or during the whole event. There were white sheets stretched in the garden and strong lights placed where the moths gradually came to off. From the sheets, they were caught with magnifier boxes in order to be identified. In this way, there are 19 different types counted, a number of several, including the Light Emerald (Campaea margaritata). This probably has to do with the time of flight. It was fun to watch it. I did not know there were existing so many in the garden . A total of 800 species live in the Netherlands. Report by Emma.

Thecla betulae Sleedoornpage

The heather Calluna vulgaris only now beginning to color purple. Very late this year. In the garden is the area that is covered with heather Calluna vulgaris, only a small corner next to the butterfly garden. On sunny days, the heather smells of honey. Bees and Calluna love each other. Who looks at the individual small flowers will be amazed by its beauty.
Erica tetralix blooms normally starting at the beginning of June, but this year they started very late. At certain places in the larger heaths can sometimes see both types coexist in bloom. Also in the garden grows a clump erica tertalis. Erica likes moist soil and calluna prefers more arid sandy soil. To just south of Nunspeet grows a third heathland species, Empetrum nigrum (crowberry), in colder places on northern slopes. Empetrum nigrum grows also in the garden.
For bees, only calluna is important. The nectar of the erica is difficult to achieve for small bees tongue, because the flower is a long balloon shape.

For bees, only calluna is important. The nectar of the erica is difficult to achieve for small bees tongue, because the flower is a long balloon shape.
